Value-Sensitive AI for Prayer: Balancing the Agencies Between Human and AI Agents in Spiritual Context
How could AI enter a deeply value-laden realm of human lives? Drawing on key values and practices associated with praying identified through a diary study, we presented our participants with four speculative, conceptual value-sensitive AI systems to “assist" prayer practices. The conceptual designs served as provocations to co-reflect on how AI interventions might shape their praying experiences. Our findings suggest that a sense of authenticity (or a genuine connection to the divine) is a crucial value, while the mere presence of AI was often perceived as diminishing this authenticity, particularly when AI assumed too much agency in guiding prayer practices. Based on our findings, we argue for the importance of AI agent designs that recognize users' agency in shaping their interaction with AI. We further explore how this may be possible by leveraging interpretive openness, perhaps through AI's inexplicabil-ity as a resource for personal meaning-making, and by recognizing non-use of AI as a legitimate design choice.
Executive Impact Summary
This study offers crucial insights for developing AI systems that resonate with deeply personal human values, shifting focus from mere efficiency to supporting authenticity and user agency in value-laden contexts.

Understanding how AI can support or hinder the user's active agency in self-reflection is crucial for meaningful spiritual AI. The research highlights a clear distinction between AI that generates content and AI that acts as a catalyst for user's own thought process.
AI's Role in Self-Reflection: Active vs. Catalyst
| AI Generating Prayer (e.g., ChatGPT) | AI as Catalyst (e.g., Bible App) |
|---|---|
| Removes personal contemplation space | Presents questions for deeper reflection |
| User unable to take agency | Prompts brainstorming on Bible verses |
| Unsatisfying experience | More demanding but leads to deeper satisfaction |
The Daily Thankful Process
The study found that AI interventions could inadvertently disrupt a user's sense of serenity through unpredictability, overwhelming information, or imposing an interrogative tone, highlighting the need for gentle, user-controlled AI presence.
Disrupting Serenity: AI's Unintended Impacts
Participants expressed significant concern that AI systems could harm the value of serenity, particularly due to the overwhelming presence of unpredictable, unwanted, and difficult-to-process outputs. For instance, with 'Daily Thankful', the sheer volume of suggested moments of gratitude could be overwhelming and lead to guilt if unable to give thanks for all.
Concerns were also raised about AI's unpredictability. For 'Prayer of the Other', the necessity of moderation to filter potentially negative or traumatic past prayer resurfacing was voiced, as a lack of control over content could diminish serenity.
Community can be a double-edged sword in spiritual practices. While it fosters connection and new perspectives, it can also lead to feelings of judgment that undermine authentic expression, especially when mediated by AI.
While shared prayers enhanced functional (diligence, new topics) and emotional (solidarity, belonging) dimensions, some participants felt the presence of an audience (even AI-mediated) hindered authentic self-reflection due to concerns about judgment or appeasing listeners.
Authenticity, defined as a genuine connection to the divine, emerged as the most critical value. AI's role must be carefully considered to avoid diminishing this connection, advocating for designs that preserve user agency and avoid overly intrusive mediation.
Fostering Authenticity with 'Question for Your Prayer'
The Unnatural Presence of AI in Spiritual Practice
A core finding was that many participants found technologies mediating their connection to the divine to be 'unnatural', 'unnecessary', and 'uncomfortable'. This sentiment was captured by P4 who felt it was 'damaging a part of nature or hindering the moment where I return to that original, natural state'.
The very idea that 'this is done by an AI' hindered deep immersion and authenticity. P3 mentioned she 'would not entirely immerse myself, thinking that 'this is done by an AI' in a small part of (her) mind.' This underscores the challenge of maintaining a genuine connection to the divine when AI is perceived as an active intermediary.
