In the era of artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence technology-empowered informal digital learning of English (AIIDLE) has become a key supplement to formal English education. This study explores the relationships between AIIDLE, L2 enjoyment with AI (AIL2E), and AI-mediated self-determined motivation (AIL2SDM) of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, with a focus on the mediating role of AIL2E. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 220 EFL students, and data were analyzed via SPSS, Jamovi, and R's lavaan package. Results indicate that AIIDLE significantly promotes AIL2E, which in turn positively influences AIL2SDM. While AIIDLE's direct effect on AIL2SDM is not statistically significant at the conventional level, AIL2E serves as a valid mediator, enabling AIIDLE to exert an indirect impact on AIL2SDM. These findings provide insights for optimizing AI-based English learning tools (with an emphasis on emotional experience) and promoting effective informal digital learning in EFL education.
