Lexical Anthropomorphization Influences on Moral Judgments of AI Bad Behavior
Unlocking AI Ethics: A Deep Dive into Human Perceptions
This research explores how humanizing language (lexical anthropomorphism, LA) and design cues influence moral judgments of AI's bad behavior. Across four studies (N=1,020), we found limited general influence. However, high-LA primes specifically increased perceptions of an AI's capacity for dishonesty. The type of moral violation (e.g., harm, degradation) was the strongest predictor, leading to broader negative character assessments. 'Prime drift' (recategorizing AI as a mere program) and egoistic value orientations also played roles in moral distancing.

Lexical anthropomorphism and humanizing design cues showed little overall influence on moral judgments of AI bad behavior, especially for amoral errors. Where effects emerged, it primarily pertained to perceived capacity for dishonesty.
Mechanism of Prime Drift in AI Perception
High-anthropomorphic primes significantly elevated perceptions of an AI's capacity to be dishonest, particularly when seen as an information exchange system.

When AI exhibited specific immoral behaviors (e.g., harm, subversion, degradation), a 'horn effect' was observed: negative evaluations transferred from the observed behavior to a broader assessment of AI's capacity for other moral violations.
Egoistic Values & Moral Distancing Mechanisms
Participants with higher egoistic value orientations (power, wealth, influence) showed a complex pattern:
- They rated AI as less capable of dishonesty and being disgusting.
- Simultaneously, they held AI more responsible for its bad behavior.
This suggests an instrumental orientation towards AI, where failures are met with accountability but also a form of 'moral distancing' to offload responsibility, aligning with self-enhancement goals.
