VR INTERVENTION ENHANCES THE SOCIAL SKILLS OF RURAL CHILDREN

VR Intervention Enhances the Social Skills of Rural Children

In response to the problem of limited social resources and restricted social ability development among rural children, this paper proposes a rural children's social ability intervention scheme based on lightweight VR technology. The research aims to design a customized VR social intervention system suitable for rural scenarios and verify its effectiveness in improving the social ability of rural children. A quasi-experimental design was adopted, and 60 rural children aged 6-12 years old were selected as the research subjects. They were randomly divided into the experimental group (receiving VR social intervention) and the control group (receiving traditional social counseling). The intervention period was 12 weeks, with 2 interventions per week, each lasting 40 minutes. Data were collected through social ability scales, system interaction logs, and behavioral observations. Statistical analysis using SPSS showed that the scores of the social ability scale of the experimental group significantly increased by 18.7% compared to before the intervention (p < 0.05). Among them, the improvement in emotional recognition ability and social initiative dimensions was the most significant, increasing by 23.3% and 20.1% respectively. The intervention effect was significantly better than that of the control group (difference value of 11.2%, p < 0.05). The research results indicate that the VR intervention system based on lightweight computer technology can effectively enhance the social ability of rural children, providing a new technical path for rural children's social education, and promoting educational equity.

The Role of HCI in VR Social Skill Intervention

This research highlights how advancements in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) are pivotal in developing effective VR systems for social skill intervention. By creating intuitive interfaces, realistic simulations, and responsive feedback mechanisms, HCI ensures that rural children can engage naturally and learn effectively in a virtual environment. The lightweight VR system's design, focusing on user comfort and accessible technology, demonstrates a practical application of HCI principles to bridge educational disparities.

Key HCI considerations include: immersive experience design, natural voice and gesture interaction, real-time behavioral analytics for personalized feedback, and system adaptability to diverse user needs and limited technical infrastructures.

Implementation Roadmap for VR Social Skills Programs

A phased approach to integrate VR intervention systems into rural educational frameworks, ensuring sustainable development and maximizing impact.

Phase 1: Pilot Program & Customization

Establish a small-scale pilot in selected rural schools. Customize VR scenarios to local cultural contexts (e.g., specific dialects, local customs) and integrate with existing educational curricula. Conduct baseline assessments and initial teacher training. Duration: 3-6 Months.

Phase 2: System Expansion & Infrastructure Development

Scale up the VR system to cover more schools. Deploy lightweight server infrastructure to support multiple VR units. Provide comprehensive training for educators on VR operation, data interpretation, and feedback mechanisms. Duration: 6-12 Months.

Phase 3: Long-term Integration & Impact Assessment

Fully integrate VR social skills training into the routine educational program. Establish continuous feedback loops with teachers, parents, and children for ongoing refinement. Conduct longitudinal studies to assess long-term social skill development and educational equity impact. Duration: 12+ Months.
